Supporting your loved one, while supporting youÂ
For many families, caring for a loved one with disability is deeply personal. It’s built on love, responsibility, culture and commitment. Exploring Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) can feel unfamiliar, and sometimes confronting. This guide is here to explain what SDA really is, and what it isn’t.Â
What SDA isÂ
SDA is housing designed to support people with high physical support or complex needs to live safely and well.Â
At its heart, SDA is about:Â
SDA works with families. It does not replace them.Â
Â
What SDA is notÂ
SDA is not:Â
Families remain central, involved and welcome.Â
Â
How SDA supports familiesÂ
Many families tell us SDA helps by:Â
You are still part of every decision. You are still involved. You are still family.Â
Â
Staying connectedÂ
Living in an SDA home does not mean losing connection.Â
Families can:Â
SDA is about choice and flexibility, not separation.Â

Trying SDAÂ
It’s okay to take things slowly.Â

Meet RecepÂ
Recep’s family comes from Turkey, where caring for family members is deeply valued. Before moving into his SDA home in Maribyrnong, Recep lived with his mum, who played a central role in his day-to-day support. Exploring SDA was a big decision, and one that came with questions about independence, connection and staying close to family.Â
Since moving, Recep has gained confidence in everyday living, from cooking and managing his own routine to travelling locally. He has also been able to focus on his passion for photography and is now studying at RMIT, drawing inspiration from the community and green spaces around his home.Â
For Recep and his family, SDA hasn’t meant stepping away from family care. It has meant sharing it differently. With the right environment and support in place, Recep has been able to grow in independence while staying connected to his culture, community and family relationships.Â
We're excited to announce that Apollo SDA and Guardian Living are merging to create a stronger, more connected SDA organisation.
Together, we'll offer greater reach, deeper expertise and more housing options — while remaining fully committed to the people, partnerships and values that matter most.
