A Fresh Start and a Creative Spark in Maribyrnong

When Recep first heard about Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), he was living with his mum in Ascot Vale and dreaming of more independence.

“I wanted to live independently, but the process felt overwhelming,” he explains.

“Thankfully, my Support Coordinator introduced me to Guardian Living, and from that point on, everything was taken care of.”

With Guardian Living’s support, Recep moved into a brand-new SDA apartment in Maribyrnong — a change that would mark the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for him.

“There were no setbacks,” Recep says. “Guardian Living looked after everything. It just made the whole process so much easier.”

Since moving, Recep says the experience has helped him grow in confidence and daily life skills.

“It’s made me stronger because now I can be more independent. I feel better about myself. I’ve learnt how to cook and take care of myself — things my mum used to do for me. That feels really good.”

Outside of home life, Recep has a creative passion that’s taken him to RMIT in Carlton, where he’s studying a Certificate IV in Photography.

“Photography has become a great passion of mine. I’m hoping to pass on my knowledge and love for it to other people who want to learn — especially people who might not have had the chance to explore it yet.”

Living in Maribyrnong has only added to Recep’s creativity, with scenic parks and riverside walks providing the perfect backdrop.

“Everything I need is within walking distance — trams, buses, Highpoint Shopping Centre, and amazing parks by the river. It’s ideal for my photography.”

When asked what advice he’d give others thinking about SDA housing, Recep says it comes down to support and mindset.

“Moving into an SDA has really improved my life. My advice is to be open to change and try to adapt as best you can. And make sure you have a great SDA provider — it makes the transition stress-free.”

From living at home to living independently, and from student to aspiring mentor, Recep is proof that when the right support is in place, independence and passion can thrive.
