Safety behind the scenes: How Fireshield is helping protect residents in SDA homes
Behind every safe home is a network of systems and people working quietly in the background. For residents living in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), that work is not just important, it can be life-changing.
For Fireshield Fire Services, a 100% Australian-owned company, that responsibility is front of mind every day.
“We provide a complete, one-stop solution for all fire protection requirements,” Anastasia from Fireshield explains. “From installation through to ongoing maintenance and repairs, our focus is making sure every system is working exactly as it should.”
Fireshield’s work spans the full lifecycle of fire safety: from installing sprinklers, alarms and detection systems, to conducting regular inspections, testing and compliance reporting. It’s this end-to-end approach that first brought them into partnership with Guardian Living.
“Fireshield first became involved with Guardian Living by delivering installation works across their SDA housing projects,” they say. “That initial work established the relationship, which has since continued through ongoing maintenance and support.”
Today, their work is embedded across our SDA homes, ensuring essential fire safety systems are not only installed, but consistently maintained to meet strict Australian Standards.
“Our work across SDA homes involves both installation and ongoing maintenance of essential fire safety systems,” Anastasia explains. “We’ve installed fire sprinklers, extinguishers, fire blankets and detection systems across a number of properties, and we continue to support these homes through regular inspection and testing.”
In SDA, where many residents may have limited mobility or require additional support, fire safety takes on even greater significance.
“Fire safety is especially important in SDA because it helps protect vulnerable residents who may not be able to evacuate independently,” she says. “Effective systems reduce the risk of injury or loss of life and help minimise damage in the event of a fire.”
That sense of purpose is something the team feels deeply.
“One particularly meaningful aspect of working with Guardian Living has been contributing to projects where our fire safety systems directly support the wellbeing of residents with additional needs,” Anastasia shares. “Knowing that the systems we install and maintain can make a real difference in protecting vulnerable people gives our work a strong sense of purpose.”
From monthly system checks to annual compliance reporting, the work is detailed and ongoing. Sprinklers and detection systems are regularly tested, portable equipment is inspected and exit paths are reviewed to ensure they remain clear and accessible.
But the future of fire safety in SDA is also evolving.
“We’re seeing greater integration with smart home and assistive technologies,” they explain. “Fire systems can now link with automated doors, lighting and communication systemshel, ping residents evacuate more safely and supporting those with higher support needs.”
There is also a shift toward more integrated design, where fire safety is considered from the earliest stages of a build.
“Planning these systems as part of the overall building design leads to better performance, clearer compliance and ultimately safer outcomes for residents.”
For residents, much of this work remains unseen but its impact is felt every day.
“We create a safe and secure environment so residents don’t have to worry about the risk of fire affecting their home or their lives,” Anastasia says.
At the heart of it all is a strong partnership with Guardian Living, built on shared values and a commitment to safety.
“Our strong partnership is built on reliability, communication and a shared commitment to compliance,” she says. “It’s about working together to ensure systems are always operational, risks are minimised, and residents are protected.”
