Guardian Living applies best practice Universal Design principles throughout the planning, design and implementation of all our accessible housing projects. Universal Design can be defined as –

“A process that enables and empowers a diverse population by improving human performance, health and wellness, and social participation”.
    Steinfeld and Maisel (2012)

The application of universal design enables the home environment to be easily adapted or changed to suit a wide range of people with varying abilities and differing levels of mobility and reach. For example, the height of a kitchen bench can be easily adjusted. Most SDA dwellings don’t facilitate this type of flexibility.

This level of adaptability allows Guardian Living to customise each home environment to enable the tenant to become more independent and less reliant on formal supports.
