Finding Freedom: Jamie’s First Year in Her Own Home

Finding Freedom: Jamie’s First Year in Her Own Home

This year marks a big milestone for Jamie — her one-year anniversary of moving into her Guardian Living SDA villa.

After growing up at home and later sharing with housemates in Ballarat, Jamie was ready for more independence. With the help of her Support Coordinator, she made the move into her own villa, and life hasn’t been the same since.

“I love the freedom,” Jamie says with a grin. “I can just be myself, be a dag if I want, and have fun doing everything I should be doing. I love that I can come home when I want—it’s my space.”

Jamie’s home is a true reflection of who she is. The walls are covered in posters, photos and plenty of colour, making it feel warm, vibrant and uniquely hers. Music plays a big role in her life—she’s a huge fan of Reece Mastin, Shannon Noll and Savage Garden, and she even sings in her own band, The Misfits.

When she’s not performing or listening to music, Jamie enjoys colouring in, watching her favourite Disney classic Beauty and the Beast or browsing the aisles at her favourite store, Kmart.

She also loves being out and about in her local community—shopping, visiting her parents, catching up with her sister, and spending time with her nieces and nephews, who affectionately call her “Aunty Jamie.” She loves that so much is accessible and she can travel independently in her own wheelchair.

Since moving into her SDA villa, Jamie has noticed not only how much happier and more independent she feels, but also how much better things are with her family. “No more fighting with Mum!” she laughs.

When asked what advice she would give to someone considering SDA, Jamie doesn’t hesitate: “I would tell someone it is good to live in SDA.”

One year on, Jamie is thriving. For her, this milestone is about more than just time passing—it’s a celebration of independence, joy and the life she has built for herself in her very own home.
