How Thoughtful Design Supports Choice and Belonging
JTA Architects has partnered with Guardian Living to develop a new, innovative model of supported housing for people with disability—one that provides comfort, choice and a true sense of belonging.
Project Architect, Deb Rowe, shared her experience working on this meaningful collaboration:
“Our role is to develop a suite of replicable, ‘dignity-enabling’ housing models for a range of typical suburban sites. The term comes from research by Professor Barbara Gibson, who showed that an ‘adequate’ home is about more than access and functionality. It’s about the quality and experience of space—feeling safe, empowered and able to express yourself in your own home. That’s the foundation of every design decision we make.”
Deb describes Guardian Living as a genuinely collaborative organisation—one that values innovation, listens to people’s lived experiences and never compromises on quality.
“Guardian Living have high standards and strong relationships, which brings out the best in everyone involved. They’re always open to improving outcomes and staying true to their principles.”
When asked what stakeholders and tenants can expect from a Guardian property, the response is clear: these homes are designed for real living.
“Our projects with Guardian feel like a home—not just a place to stay. They’re spacious, full of natural light and provide a sense of ownership and possibility. Nothing is done as a tick-box exercise. Everything—from the location to the layout—is thoughtfully considered. Tenants can trust in Guardian’s reputation and attention to detail. They don’t take shortcuts or settle for minimum standards. They’re committed to doing things properly and always with the resident in mind.”
Reflecting on the work so far, the JTA team is proud to have contributed to something with long-lasting impact.
“We’ve never had to compromise on our values. Guardian respects and supports our expertise, and together we’ve delivered housing that makes a real difference. That’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”
